Below you will find links to some of the very best picture sites on the Web, sites featuring fashion models, supermodels, celebrities, and other beautiful women. Also listed are sources of information on scanning and digital-image editing. Each site listed is fully described, and all meet two important criteria. First, they are free and, like The Art of Beauty, require no memberships, passwords, or fees of any kind. Second, they are, in my opinion, of exceptional quality and offer you something unique. I do not claim the list to be comprehensive, nor do I intend it to rank sites. I'm sure there are many equally worthy ones out there that I am unable to list or have not found. Also, since I am unable to verify these links as often as I'd like, I encourage visitors or webmasters to alert me to any broken links or significant changes in the content or location of sites listed.
Webmasters wishing to be listed, do not contact me without reading the note below.
(Note: Many pages (including some listed below) that bill themselves as "supermodel" or "model" links pages actually focus more on popular celebrities like actresses and other media stars as well as calendar and Playboy-type models. Few provide links for any but the best-known "supermodels." If you are looking for true fashion-model links, some of those below will be useful, but you should also look to the fashion-oriented pages already listed above, almost all of which provide links to sites like themselves.
For some reason, I get a lot of email from people asking how to become a model. I actually know very little about the modeling industry except that it is filled with scams and rip-offs. My basic advice is twofold. First, if you're underage, get your parents permission and help. This is not just a good idea; it is absolutely essential because minors cannot sign modeling contracts on their own. Secondly, if you're really interested in being a high-fashion model (like most of the women depicted on this site), start at the top. Contact the top modeling agencies. If they think you have potential, they will see to it that you get what you need to get started. You don't need a bunch of professional pictures or any kind of training. If they want you, they will provide everything.
Important Note: Very, very few people are going to establish careers as models. A girl has only a little better chance of becoming a top model than a boy does of becoming an NBA basketball player. One important similarity between these two aspirations is that they both depend a great deal on inherited physical characteristics, qualities people have no control over. For example, almost all female fashion models are taller than 5'8". If you are 5'6" you have almost no chance. Other physical traits, like facial bone structure and body type are also important. Not having these traits does not mean a person is not beautiful. In fact, many of the most beautiful women in the world would not be chosen as fashion models. For example, almost none of the top box-office movie stars would make it. There is also one major difference between how a model is chosen and whether a basketball player can make a professional team. Basketball is performance-oriented. A potential player can either performed assigned tasks or he cannot. On the other hand, modeling is a fashion-oriented profession. By definition, "fashion" is a constantly changing ideal that is defined by a few people's opinions. In other words, a potential model's success often depends on one or two people's opinion of the way she looks. If she doesn't fit the "look" they want at that particular moment, she's out even though last year she might have been "in." There's no real reason to it; it is totally subjective. What I'm trying to say is that success or failure as an aspiring model has nothing to do with a person's value; it doesn't even have anything to do with a person's beauty. It is the result of the arbitrary judgement of a few people and the particular image they wish to present at a particular time. In short, it's a crap shoot.
Having said all that, I must now say that a few people do succeed (otherwise there'd be no Art of Beauty), and there's no reason not to give it a shot if you're so inclined. Below are some links to major modeling agencies and other sites with information aspiring models may find useful. I haven't had time to review these sites yet, so I offer them "as is" for the present.
